Means and methods of mailing plants privately on flea market apps [Mercari and Rakuma].

Hello everyone, this is logminami.

I have recently become addicted to houseplants and have purchased quite a few of them on Mercari.

In some cases, the plants did well despite being delivered in an unexpectedly delicate-looking package, while in others, the plants were received as ‘beautifully packaged and pretty’, and after a few days of growing, the plants did not grow and died.

This time, we hope to write a reference for those who are buying and selling at flea markets and other transactions.

 So here you go.

Postal Style

What I thought was best!

Plastic bottle mailing style.

Before I go any further, I would like to mention what I personally find to be the best part: the fact that the bottle can be shipped without crushing the leaves or anything else, and with air inside the bottle!

It is good for both the sender and the recipient, as well as being recyclable.

Gas-based plastic bottles look particularly good as they are robust.

However, the disadvantage is that you send it yourself by post, so anonymous delivery is not possible and the addresses of the sender and recipient will be made public, which may be a concern for those who are concerned about this.

Anonymous delivery should only be possible by standard mail, so that is a problem.

The plants were purchased in this way!

Wet paper tissues were placed inside aluminium foil.

It is a type of plant with strong roots, and the fact that it was slightly covered with soil may have been a good thing.

(Soil is a difficult soil texture to clean up, so it is probably better not to have it in the first place...)

Notes

I wish I was careful as a sender. ... means I thought the following

No broken leaves

It is important that the leaves are not broken.

Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act (種苗法)

When listing or mailing plants and seeds on flea market applications (Mercari and Racuma), it is important to know about the Seed Act. The Seeds and Seed Act protects the rights of developers of new varieties and promotes agricultural development. Violations of this law may result in penalties.

Points to note

  1. Handling of registered varieties.
The Seeds and Seed Act prohibits the unauthorised propagation or sale of registered varieties (like patents). For example, it is illegal to sell registered varieties of fruit trees or flowers without authorisation.
  2. Plants imported from abroad
Plants and seeds brought in from abroad are subject to similar regulations if they are registered varieties. They may also be subject to quarantine.
  3. Appropriate labels and descriptions.
When exhibiting, you are expected to provide accurate information on the name of the plant, its characteristics and how to grow it. Selling with inaccurate information not only inconveniences buyers, but can also cause problems.

When listing plants on a flea market app, it is important to follow the Seeds and Seed Act and provide the correct procedures and information. Check the law carefully and enjoy trading with peace of mind.

Happy if the packaging is cute.

When you buy plants or seeds on a flea market app, it makes you happy when they arrive in cute packaging. For sellers, careful and stylish packaging can also increase buyer satisfaction and lead to repeat customers.

Cute packaging ideas

  1. Use of natural materials
Just add kraft paper, twine and dried flowers for a warm, natural look. They also work well with plants.
  2. Add a handwritten message card.
Handwrite simple growing instructions and a thank-you note to let the buyer know how much you care. Even a simple card with a stamp or sticker can be cute!
  3. Transparent bags + ribbon for show packaging
Seeds and small plants can be placed in transparent bags so that the contents can be seen for added excitement. Add ribbons and stickers to make them even cuter.
  4. Decide on a theme colour.
Use a colour scheme that matches the season and plants to create a unified and professional look. For example, pastel colours for spring and red and green for Christmas.

Benefits of cute packaging

  • The moment the purchaser receives the product is a moment of joy.
  • Easy to get high marks in reviews for ‘the packaging was lovely.’
  • Differentiates itself from other exhibitors.

Increase the number of wonderful transactions by valuing not only the attractiveness of the plants themselves, but also the experience at the moment of receipt!

What to look out for and check when buying

Check if it is one that has roots.

It can be quite difficult to remove the roots yourself.

It will not simply grow on its own if you put it in the soil. (From personal experience...)

When buying plants on flea market apps, it is important to check the condition of the plant and its ease of growing. In particular, it is important to check whether the plant has roots in order to grow it. Below is a list of things to look out for

1. 1. check for the presence of roots

Check whether the plant you are buying is ‘rooted’ or ‘in need of growing from cuttings or seed’.

  • Rooted benefits: easier to grow and more likely to take root.
  • Disadvantages of unrooted: it takes time and effort to get them to root themselves and there is a risk of failure.

Check the seller's description and photos, and if you are unsure, feel free to message the seller in advance.

2. 2. plant health

  • Leaves look healthy (no discolouration or dead areas)
  • Check for pests and diseases (pay particular attention to the undersides of leaves and at the base of stems).
If the picture is not clear, additional images may be requested.

3. 3. information on how to grow

  • Research the conditions under which the plants will grow, such as sunlight, frequency of watering and temperature control.
  • Ensure that the home is ready for growing immediately after purchase.

4. delivery method and packaging conditions

  • Check that the packaging method is good to prevent damage in transit.
  • It's also a good idea to ask about shipping methods, such as ‘shipping with soil attached’ or ‘shipping with roots moistened.’

5. the exhibitor's rating and comments

Use reviews of previous transactions and buyers' comments to determine if the seller is trustworthy.

Before purchasing, it is important to check in detail the health of the plant, how it is grown and shipped, including whether it has roots. To grow plants with peace of mind, take the extra step to check them thoroughly!

It is said that using a plant energiser such as Menedel, such as this one, may help to stabilise the cuttings...

(However, it is important to note that this is a hormonal agent and should only be used on ornamental plants.)
