February 2 World Wetlands Day

February 2 is World Wetlands Day.

To promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands, in August 2021, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate this day as World Wetlands Day, as designated by the United Nations.

This is a relatively recently established anniversary!

Wetlands play an important role for the earth and humans, as wetland ecosystems are created.

Restored wetlands act as sponges against heavy rainfall and flooding, mitigating coastal storm surges and protecting communities during extreme weather events.

Wetlands also naturally filter water, removing contaminants and facilitating local water supplies.

There is a "Convention on Wetlands of International Importance" as the Ramsar Convention.

June 8 is World Ocean Day.
This was established in 2008, also by the UN General Assembly, and is a day to think about the importance of the ocean.

On this occasion, a number of ocean-related events are being organized at both the high level and at the regional level.

The ocean-related events seem to be mostly related to marine and plastic waste, and RIVIERA seems to have introduced an event called "LOVE OCEAN".

It was stipulated in the "Law Concerning the Promotion of Tsunami Countermeasures" enacted in June 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and furthermore, in 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated the same day as "World Tsunami Day".

The reason for this date actually goes back quite far.

When the tsunami caused by the Ansei Nankai Earthquake hit Hirokawa-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, on November 5, 1854, Goryo Hamaguchi set fire to the rice fields and led the villagers who could not escape the tsunami to higher ground, saving many lives. (Reference:Wakayama prefecture (Kinki area)
